Fire Extinguisher Recharging and Maintenance in NYC

A fire extinguisher that has been partially or fully discharged is not protecting anyone. It needs to be recharged — the chemical agent replaced, the cylinder re-pressurized, and the unit returned to full operational condition. NFPA 10 also mandates a complete internal examination and maintenance service every six years for stored-pressure dry chemical extinguishers, regardless of whether they have been used. If your building has extinguishers that were last serviced in 2019 or earlier, they are overdue.

Empire Fire Services handles every aspect of fire extinguisher servicing for NYC buildings. Our technicians perform dry chemical recharging, internal component inspection, O-ring and valve stem replacement, and full pressure testing. We service all common extinguisher types — ABC dry chemical, BC, CO2, water, and wet chemical units. Each serviced extinguisher is returned with a new service tag documenting the work performed and the next service due date.

For buildings that cannot afford to have extinguishers off-site, we provide loaner units during servicing. Your coverage is never interrupted. We pick up the units that need work, leave loaners in their place, and return your recharged and serviced extinguishers once the work is complete. For smaller jobs where recharging can be done on-site, our technicians bring the equipment to your building and complete the work same-day.

We coordinate recharging with our inspection service so you are not scheduling two separate visits. If our inspector identifies units that need recharging during an annual inspection, we flag them immediately and schedule the service — or handle it on the same visit when possible. One provider, no gaps in coverage, no surprises on your invoice.

How Recharging Works

From pickup to return, your extinguishers are back in service fast.

1

Assessment & Pickup

We identify which units need recharging or 6-year service. Units are picked up from your building and loaner extinguishers are placed in their spots so you maintain full coverage.

2

Service & Recharge

Each unit is depressurized, disassembled, internally examined, recharged with fresh chemical agent, re-pressurized, and tested. Worn O-rings, valve stems, and seals are replaced.

3

Return & Documentation

Recharged units are returned to their original locations with new service tags. Loaners are collected. You receive a service report documenting all work performed.

FAQ

Fire Extinguisher Service FAQ

When do fire extinguishers need to be recharged?
Fire extinguishers must be recharged after any use (even partial discharge), when the pressure gauge shows undercharge, during 6-year maintenance, and after hydrostatic testing. Stored-pressure dry chemical extinguishers require internal examination every 6 years per NFPA 10.
How long does recharging take?
Most recharges are completed same-day. For larger buildings, we can provide loaner extinguishers while yours are being serviced so you maintain coverage at all times.
