NFPA 10 requires periodic hydrostatic pressure testing to verify your extinguisher cylinders are safe. We test, certify, and return your units ready for service.
Fire extinguisher cylinders are pressure vessels. Over time, metal fatigues. Microscopic cracks can form from repeated pressurization cycles, corrosion, impact damage, or simple age. A cylinder that fails under pressure during a fire is worse than no extinguisher at all — it becomes a projectile. That is why NFPA 10 and DOT regulations require periodic hydrostatic testing to verify every cylinder can safely hold its rated pressure.
Empire Fire Services provides DOT-compliant hydrostatic pressure testing for all fire extinguisher types. The process is straightforward: we depressurize and empty the extinguisher, fill the cylinder with water, pressurize it to the specified test pressure (typically 1.5 times the service pressure), and hold that pressure while monitoring for leaks, distortion, or failure. Cylinders that pass receive a permanent stamp with the test date and our facility number. Cylinders that fail are condemned and replaced — you never want to put a failed cylinder back into service.
Testing intervals vary by extinguisher type. Stored-pressure water and CO2 extinguishers require hydrostatic testing every 5 years. Stored-pressure dry chemical extinguishers require testing every 12 years. Any cylinder that shows visible damage, corrosion, or has been exposed to fire must be tested regardless of age. During our annual inspections, our technicians identify units that are approaching their hydrostatic test due date so you can plan the service in advance rather than scrambling when the fire marshal notices an overdue stamp.
We handle the entire process: pickup from your building, loaner extinguisher placement, testing, recharging of passing units, and return to their original locations with updated documentation. For condemned cylinders, we provide replacement options and handle disposal. Your building never loses fire extinguisher coverage during the testing process.
From pickup to return, your extinguishers are tested and certified.
We collect the extinguishers due for testing and place loaner units in their spots. Your building maintains full fire extinguisher coverage at all times.
Each cylinder is emptied, filled with water, and pressurized to the specified test pressure. We monitor for leaks, distortion, and structural integrity. Passing cylinders are permanently stamped.
Passing units are recharged with fresh agent, re-pressurized, and returned to your building with updated test stamps and documentation. Failed cylinders are condemned and replacement options provided.
Stored-pressure water extinguishers, CO2 extinguishers, and wet chemical (Class K) extinguishers. If your CO2 units were last tested in 2021 or earlier, they are due now.
Stored-pressure dry chemical (ABC and BC) extinguishers. These are the most common type in NYC buildings. If yours were manufactured or last tested in 2014 or earlier, they need testing.
Any cylinder with visible dents, corrosion, or fire damage. Any cylinder that has been exposed to temperatures exceeding its rating. Any cylinder where the hydrostatic test date stamp is illegible.
